Should We Ban Social Media?

The short answer is no!

But, the complete solution is that we must create rules, perhaps even an amendment to The Constitution, to prevent the destruction of our country.

The 1st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Ban Social Media Pro’s

  • Abridging: Social media distorts the news by creating algorithms that change or delete what people say. The 1st Amendment was designed to protect the media and “We The People.” The difference is that companies that report the news do just that. They are writing what they want to convey. The Constitution protects them. People, however, are saying what they want to say. Therefore they are also protected by the Constitution.
  • Freedom of Speech: Social media violates the 1st Amendment by banning people from their platforms if they disagree. This ban is used under the guise of someone saying something that is not true. Yet, that is usually the opinion of the company, not the truth.
  • There are many known situations where social media had banned information as untrue when no one fully knew the facts. Such actions prevent the publication of questions or investigations from being reported, allowing citizens to form their own opinions or ask questions.

Ban Social Media CONS

  • Information: Social media is an excellent way to speak opinions and let the reader decide right or wrong. Also, to determine if they should support or not support a cause. News organizations report and distort what they want people to hear. Social media can register in the person’s own words.
  • Fast communications: Social media allows the flow of information to millions of people quickly and exactly as written or said.
  • Freedom of Speech: Freedom of speech is guaranteed when social media cannot edit or ban personal opinions. There should be minimal restraints put on content if any. Some cases have gone before the Supreme Court that has already guided in this area. Here are two excellent articles from and with more details.

Destruction of our country may sound harsh, but you can see the harm in media distortion if you are paying any attention at all. Those who deny the possibility are most likely in control or want to be in control. Noam Chomsky once said, “He who controls the media controls the minds of the public.” For more on this topic, here is a very informative articleNo private organization or Government should ever be given that kind of power. When it falls into the wrong hands, it can destroy a nation.
